Pinkerton Graduate Fellowship
The Pinkerton Graduate Fellowship combines clinical experience and comprehensive coursework in youth justice for graduate students in John Jay College’s Forensic Psychology and Forensic Mental Health Counseling programs.
Clinical placements
Pinkerton Graduate Fellows complete paid externships at New York City nonprofit organizations focused on youth justice, and are exposed to a variety of clinical responsibilities, including interviewing, counseling, assessment, treatment planning, note-taking, clinical research, team meetings, report writing, and other direct client services.
Externships are supervised on-site by a licensed staff psychologist, psychiatrist, or social worker for at least one hour each week. Fellows serve at partner organizations full-time (35 hours per week) during the summer and in the month of January, and part-time (at least 14 hours per week) during their fall and spring semesters. The placement fulfills the externship requirement for John Jay’s Master’s programs in Forensic Psychology and Forensic Mental Health Counseling.
Academic coursework
As a complement to the clinical externship, Pinkerton Graduate Community Fellows also take a 12-credit upper level undergraduate course in sociology [UGR390] taught by top John Jay faculty and prominent leaders in the New York community.
Pinkerton Graduate Community Fellows earn six credits through a two-semester course designed to enhance their understanding of clinical practice and youth justice. Fellows also participate in a diverse range of professional development and enrichment opportunities.
Compensation
- A stipend of $4,000 for the summer and $1,250 for the month of January.
- Full tuition remission for John Jay courses taken while participating in the Fellowship. (Note: Tuition remission is applied at the in-state rate. Fellows who pay out-of-state tuition are responsible for paying the difference.)
- An unlimited monthly metro card
- An opportunity grant up to $1000
Eligibility Criteria:
- Master’s student in Forensic Psychology or Forensic Mental Health Counseling at John Jay College, enrolled for the entire academic year of the Fellowship.
- GPA of 3.3 or higher.
- Demonstrated interest in youth justice, direct service, and clinical practice.
