Name Change Announcement

We are excited to announce that the Prisoner Reentry Institute is now the John Jay College Institute for Justice and Opportunity. After 15 years as the “Prisoner Reentry Institute,” we decided to adopt a new name that more accurately reflects the scope of our work, our aspirations, and our commitment to person-first language.

We arrived at this name after a lengthy and consultative process—actively soliciting input and feedback from our staff, partner organizations, and the individuals we serve. We believe that the Institute for Justice and Opportunity better reflects our values and our mission—to create opportunities for people to live successfully in the community after involvement with the criminal legal system.

The words “justice” and “opportunity” are deliberately aspirational—they speak to the future of opportunity and possibility for people impacted by the criminal legal system. They also speak more broadly to the many pathways and possibilities facilitated by the programs we offer.

Although our organizational name has changed, our programs will retain their individual names, and we will continue to operate as part of the Research Foundation of CUNY.
